Bliss Perry(25November 1860 – 13 February 1954), was an American literary critic, writer,editor, and teacher. Perry was born inWilliamstown,MassachusettstoArthur Latham Perry, aprominent economist, and Mary Brown Perry. He was educated atWilliams College, Williamstown, as well as the universitiesofBerlinandStrasbourg. Perrytaught at Williams from 1886 until 1893. He then taught atPrinceton University,where he became acquainted with future US presidentWoodrow Wilson, Dean Andrew West, and former USPresidentGrover Cleveland, aboutwhom he wrote entertainingly in his autobiographical work,And GladlyTeach. Perry taught atHarvard Universitybetween1907 and 1930 and was the Harvard lecturer at theUniversity of Parisfrom1909 to 1910. From 1899 to 1909 he was the editor ofThe Atlantic Monthly. Perrywas awarded theLegion of Honourbythe French. He edited the works ofEdmund Burke, SirWalter Scott, andRalph Waldo Emerson. From1905 until 1909 he was general editor of theCambridgeedition ofthe major American poets. He wrote extensively, including monographs onWalt Whitman,John Greenleaf Whittier,Thomas Carlyleand Emerson. He was also a prolific writerof novels, short fiction, essays, studies in poetry, and an autobiography. Perryis famed in certain Vermont lore for "establishing" the "summercolony" ofGreensboro, Vermont. Heenjoyed its tranquil setting and its distance from the cares of the busy worldof theAtlantic Monthlyand his professorships. Fly fishingwas one of his key hobbies, which led to the publication of "Fishing Witha Worm." Perry was the brotherof Dr.Lewis Perry, headmasterofPhillips Exeter Academyfrom1914 to 1946. In 1954 Perry died inExeter, New Hampshire.
