I am always happy to help.About the ArtistZoya Pavlovna Sineva (1925–1986)From 1943 to 1948, Zoya Pavlovna Sineva studied at the Palekh Art School. From 1948, she worked at the Association of Palekh Artists, and later at the Palekh Art and Production Workshops.Her works include compositions based on folklore as well as genre scenes.Works by Z. P. Sineva are held in the collection of the State Museum of Palekh Art and the Art Fund of Russia.About Palekh and the Origins of Palekh Lacquer MiniaturePalekh had been famous for its icon painters for centuries. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, however, the traditional icon-painting profession went into decline, and Palekh artists had to find new ways to preserve and apply their artistic skills.An important role in the birth of Palekh lacquer miniature was played by Alexander Alexandrovich Glazunov, who had a workshop in Moscow. The Palekh icon painter Ivan Golikov, who was Glazunov’s relative by marriage, worked with him. Other Palekh masters, including Ivan Vakurov and Alexander Kotukhin, were also associated with this circle.In 1922, Glazunov and Golikov visited the Handicraft Museum in Moscow, where they became acquainted with painted lacquer objects made of papier-mâché. This encounter helped inspire experiments with transferring the traditional techniques of Palekh icon painting to a new medium.Golikov began experimenting with painting on black papier-mâché objects in Glazunov’s Moscow workshop. Instead of abandoning the centuries-old artistic language of Palekh icon painting, the artists adapted it to secular subjects — fairy tales, literature, folklore, history and scenes of everyday life.These early experiments became the foundation of what is now known throughout the world as Palekh lacquer miniature.On December 5, 1924, seven Palekh artists — Ivan Golikov, Ivan Bakanov, Ivan Markichev, Ivan and Alexander Zubkov, and Alexander and Vladimir Kotukhin — founded the Artel of Ancient Painting.The Artel was soon joined by other important Palekh masters, including Ivan Vakurov, Aristarkh Dydykin, Dmitry Butorin, Nikolai Zinoviev and others.Together, these artists developed a new form of decorative art, combining the centuries-old traditions and techniques of Palekh icon painting with lacquer miniature painting on papier-mâché.In 1925, Palekh miniatures were exhibited at the International Exhibition in Paris, where the new art attracted international attention.During the following decades, Palekh developed into one of the most important centers of Russian lacquer miniature painting.
