Item Description:I am pleased to offer this original hand-made Japanese army officers Samuraisword from World War 2. The blade represents the opportunity to own a gendaito katana by the famous WW2swordsmith Nagamitsu in high endShin Gunto mounts with a tassel onthe handle. The blade and the mountings are in Near MINT condition. It is a healthy sword and has a bladelength of 26 inches (66cm). It shows a well-grained and tight ko-itame hada. The hamon is a Rai-style gunome that features rounded gunome formations based on a suguha pattern. The hamon is present the length of the blade throughthe kissaki where it ends in a well-defined maruboshi. There are also very many activities in the hamon including sunagashi,yubashiri, ashi and yoin and along the hamon.

The blade is signed IchiharaNagamitsu in a nice, well-chiseled script. Ichihara Nagamitsu is a famous World War 2 smith known for makinghigh grade gendaito and his swords cutting abilities. He can be referenced inSloughs pg. 123-125.

The mountings are high end Type98 Shin Gunto and in Near MINTcondition. The tsuka is silk-cord wrapped with cherry blossom menuki. There is littleto no fraying. A company grade officer’s blue/brown tassel is attached to the tsuka. The tsuba is classic WW2 with fouraccompanying metal seppa. The saya (scabbard) is green painted metal with aleather weathering cover. The leather cover is supple and well-aged. The sayashows no dents and given the cover, it is assumed that underneath the sayaretains roughly 96-98% originalfinish. The locking mechanism is present. The blade is in Near MINT condition. It shows no nicks, just a few scatteredvery small spots of rust, and some small scratches along the blades length.There are no major flaws like hagire.

Given the high-qualitycraftsmanship, reputation of the swordsmith, and outstanding condition, I highly recommend this piece to acollector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
