"Inserts" 1988 NY Times Supplement – Holzer Kruger Prince Gonzalez-Torres Weems:
$495.00

“Inserts” – Group Material (1988)This is the original May 22, 1988 New York Times Sunday newspaper art supplement—not a later reproduction, reprint, facsimile, or modern publication. The work was intentionally created for distribution through the newspaper, making the original newspaper format itself an integral part of the artwork.
This is a complete and original example of Inserts, produced by the influential artist collective Group Material as part of their groundbreaking effort to reposition contemporary art within everyday life.
Conceived as an “insertion” into mass media, this work bypassed traditional gallery systems by embedding itself directly into a widely circulated publication. In doing so, it challenged the boundaries of authorship, audience, and context—placing politically engaged art into the hands of tens of thousands of readers.ART HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Inserts is recognized as a significant work of late 20th-century conceptual and political art. Produced at a moment of heightened cultural tension, it addresses themes including:
The AIDS crisis
Media and information control
Race, gender, and representation
The political climate of the late Cold War era
The project remains a defining example of how artists engaged directly with public discourse outside institutional walls.CONTRIBUTING ARTISTS
