-2000b Archeological Investigations of Custer's June 23, 1876 Campsite, Rosebud County, Montana. Ms on file, Midwest Archeological Center, Lincoln, NE.

Custer’s June 23rd campsite on Rosebud Creek is marked by a stone pyramid on the highway. The archeological team was granted access to this private land for inventory purposes. A few 1876 era artifacts, including buttons, a fired cartridge case, horseshoe nails, and a coffee tin were recovered providing some insight into the size and layout of the camp.

The 2000 archaeological investigation cited in my listing was published in the 2001 Archaeological Periodical in Nebraska, I use it as a reference to show that horseshoe nails have been found near Rosebud Creek. My grandfather bought these nails from a local digger in Montana who would metal detect the battlefield and surrounding areas before it was designated a national landmark and preserve. Grandpa worked for the US Geological survey and was based in Billings, Montana for a large portion of his career. The nails are consistent with the type used by the US Army during the Indian Wars and have mineral deposits and patina consistent with being underground for many years.

The Putnam's Horse Shoe Nail company was a leading maker of nails at the time.

Authentic original General Custer artifacts. Each purchase gets 2 horseshoe nails. Size, style, condition will vary.A magnificent patina is seen. Some signs of hammer forging. Marked US. Good example of horseshoe nails used during the Battle of Little Big Horn. Each BUY IT NOW gets 2 nails of my choice. Cannot pick. Good luck and God bless!
