The chisel wasrecently obtained from a collector’s tool estate sale, shows well cared for,exact era unknown.
Ibelieve this is a early straight edge firmer / framing wood socket chisel, madeby the W.C. Bailey / Sag Harbor Tool Company, out of Sag-Harbor New York.Information on this company is very scarce but some resources were found thatthe company was in operations from 1875 thru 1897 or at lease up to 1904. Thecompany was a manufacturer of edge tools, as wood chisels, draw knifes and thelike…..
Thecompany used the rectangle block logo with notched corners with W.C. BAILEY SAGHARBOR TOOL CO. stamped inside as a logo trade mark from 1880 thru 1896
The chisel is stampedon the blade on the front side W .C. Bailey / Sag Harbor Tool Co (in a rectangle with notchedcorners).
The chisel is 11 1/8”in overall length and from the blade tip to the end of the socket is 7 5/8”,and the handle is 3 3/8\" long.
The blade is a straight edge and is 1/2\"wide.
Thechisel is in good condition, and has been lightly cleaned,….. not sure ifhandle is original or not,….,…..As with the vintage of thechisel, there is some normal wear, a few minor dents & dings, and somediscoloration, all noted from the photos.
