This object is a vintage blown-glass fly trap (also known as a glass fly catcher or wasp trap). How It Works* The Bait: Sweetened water, sugar, honey, or meat pieces were placed in the shallow gutter circling the inner bottom cone.* The Entry: The entire unit sat raised on small feet or peg legs (or resting flat over small blocks). Insects would crawl underneath the open center hole at the bottom, attracted by the smell.* The Trap: Once inside, flies would fly upward toward the bright light filtering through the glass. Because of the inverted glass cone geometry, they could not figure out how to fly back down through the narrow central opening, eventually falling into the liquid ring and getting trapped.Historically popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries, these are now highly sought-after rustic primitives and farmhouse collectibles.
