THE SKS IN THE SOVIET ARMED FORCES
The SKS was adopted by the Soviet Union after World War II and served as a standard infantry weapon before the Kalashnikov assault rifle became dominant.
By the 1960s and 1970s, the SKS had largely disappeared from front-line infantry service, but remained in Soviet military use for guard, training and ceremonial purposes. Its traditional rifle-like proportions and permanently attached folding bayonet also made it particularly suitable for military drill and ceremonial formations.
This 1974 poster is an interesting period document from that later stage of the SKS's Soviet military service, showing the carbine not as an isolated weapon but as part of actual Soviet military drill practice.
