vintage FEDERAL GLASS Patio Snack Set USA c.1960—four milk glass plates and cups For Sale

Offered for your consideration is a vintage FEDERAL GLASS CO. Patio Snack Set, USA-manufactured c.1960. This set is made from milk glass and contains four (4) snack plates and four (4) tea cups. It was sold to me at a local antique show as “new old stock,” but I have no way to verify that claim and, accordingly, have listed it as used.

*Two (2) boxed sets are available at time of this writing, so please choose if you’d like to purchase one or both in the quantity field at the top of the listing. Those first two sets are flawless, but I do have a third unlisted set with a chipped plate that I will discount. So, if somebody is interested in all three sets, please contact me to let’s get something straight. There’s no such thing as an “atomic flower”—at least not one that looks anything like this pattern—and the set is certainly not called that. It is the “Patio Snack Set” as clearly shown on the retail box. FEDERAL produced others in milk glass like the Blossom Snack Set, Rosecrest Snack Set, Chalet Snack Set, et al., also named as such on their respective boxes.

I suspect the atomic flower nonsense started decades ago when some seller/s only researched the pattern on replacements.com—a popular source for vintage china and tableware—which inexplicably calls it that. Once a few sellers titled their listing that way, over time hundreds of lazy ones adopt the mistake for their own listing instead of doing a couple minutes of simple research to get it right.

What\'s more, it’s not a stretch to say that the pattern looks exactly like a cannabis leaf (which is typically represented with seven leaves, but sometimes nine like here).

In the relatively uptight late 1950’s, the image was certainly not as popularly known as it would become in the decades to follow. But, it had existed in botanical and other scientific texts for centuries and was slowly dunking its toe into the mainstream. So, I could see some beatnik graphic designer slipping it past the starchy higher-ups for production approval. Conjecture, sure, but it beats reading AI drivel.

Nowadays, quite a few people looking for this set or discussing grandma’s cool old snack dishes on Facebook, Reddit, and elsewhere simply call them the pot leaf plates!

This Patio Snack Set is in very clean, outstanding condition. The plates measure 105/16” wide x 73/16” high and stand ¾” tall while the diminutive cups are 2¼” tall, 3¼” wide at the mouth, and 1⅝” wide at the base.

There are no chips, cracks, or blemishes noted anywhere on the set and the vividly-colored leaf graphics are perfect, as pictured. Plus, the rigid, braced retail box is in great physical shape but does have some mild age discoloration from the years.
