The box retains its original Series of 1917 federal revenue stamp and factory identification for Factory No. 374, 8th District, Illinois. The front also carries an early United Brotherhood of Cigar Makers and Joiners of America union label associated with the Chicago district.
The interior label is the star of the box, with bold red, gold and black graphics surrounding the oversized BIG HIT name and prominent 5¢ advertising. The exterior also retains the custom printed BIG HIT paper trim, giving the box much more character than a typical unbranded cigar box from the period.
George Saultz / Big Hit appears to have been a small regional Illinois cigar brand, and examples are difficult to locate today.
