This c1908 postcard features a vivid lithograph titled “The Test,” showing a men’s footrace before a large crowd, with runners in period athletic uniforms marked by letters. The image is framed by a distinct Art Nouveau border, with stylized green tendrils and red berry accents, typical of the early 20th-century decorative movement.
The card was sent from Richmond, Virginia, in December 1908 to Miss Eda de Brito, care of Allen & Ginter, a prominent tobacco company in Richmond.
This card is an excellent example of early sports-themed ephemera, valued for its Art Nouveau presentation, athletic subject, and connection to Richmond’s business and social history.
