Antique illustrated The Horse Educator, associated with Prof. W. A. Brush, an extensive late-19th-century manual devoted to practical horse training, handling, driving, shoeing, care, anatomy, veterinary remedies, history, and even teaching horses tricks.

This copy bears an 1895 ownership inscription for J. M. Cline of Canfield, providing excellent period provenance and establishing that this particular book was in use by 1895.

The book contains 224 numbered pages, with an extensive index at the rear, and is illustrated throughout with numerous period engravings. The illustrations are a major feature, showing horses being trained and handled along with bridles, ropes, harness arrangements, shoeing methods, teeth and anatomical details.

The horse-training section is especially extensive and includes such subjects as:

  • Nature and behavior of the horse
  • Catching and haltering a colt
  • Handling and bitting a colt
  • The War Bridle
  • Trip-rope methods
  • Teaching a horse to lead, start, stop and back
  • Training for single and double harness
  • Breaking balky horses
  • Handling horses that rear, strike or kick
  • Horses that shy, bolt or run away
  • Preventing jumping and knocking down fences
  • Breaking tail-rubbing habits
  • Handling an old halter puller
  • Training a horse to stand tied
  • Training prancing and racking horses
  • Trotting rigs
  • Double-hitch methods

There is considerable material devoted to shoeing and handling difficult horses, accompanied by striking engravings. Illustrated subjects include “How to Clinch a Bad Horse on Front Feet” and “How to Shoe a Bad Horse on Hind Feet,” showing the period rope and restraint systems used by blacksmiths and horsemen.

Driving and harness material includes “How to Drive a Kicker in Single Harness,” switching rigs, cruppers, back straps, britchy rigs, double hitches and other equipment.

Another particularly strong section concerns determining a horse's age by its teeth. Numerous illustrations show the development and appearance of the mouth at two weeks, six weeks, one year, two years, 2½ years, three years, four years, five years, six years, seven years and eight years. Additional illustrations depict the full mouth, parrot mouth, molar tooth, upper jaw and horse's face.

The book also contains practical farriery and veterinary material, including shoeing notes and discussions or period recipes for:

  • Corns
  • Founder
  • Horse ointment
  • Ringbones, spavins, curbs and splints
  • Bone spavin
  • Sole bruises and gravel
  • Cracked hoof
  • Pricking
  • Chafing and sore shoulders
  • Condition powders and liniments

An entertaining section on HORSE TRICKS explains how to teach a horse to come at the crack of a whip, bow, lie down, sit up, “kiss,” shake hands and even mark off his age on command.

The latter portion broadens into the history and natural history of the horse, with discussion of European, Asian, African and American horses. Subjects include the Arabian, Persian, Turkish and other Asian horses; European cart horses, Hackneys, hunters and racers; and American horses.

Of particular American interest is discussion of early roadster families, including the Narragansett Pacers, Morgan and Black Hawk families.

There is even a section on the legal warranty involved in purchasing a horse, including a sample period receipt for the purchase of a $300 black mare and discussion of what constituted a legally warranted horse.

Overall, this is much more than a simple horse-training book. It is a broad late-19th-century reference covering horsemanship, behavioral training, harness driving, blacksmithing/farriery, veterinary remedies, anatomy, horse identification and aging, breed history, horse dealing and performing tricks.
