Research / Bonus Information:- AI Generated: (NOT confirmed / simply a copy & paste by me).Harvard football player... from an 1899–1900 Victorian Trade Card series. This card is one of the earlier known football cards. This specific card can be dated to 1899 (or earlier), because the back of known examples include semi-annual financial statements from that year. This 19th Century football card is usually found with a small printed No. 26 in the lower left front corner. This is a scarcer variant which lacks that number, and which is not advertising the usual New York "HOME" insurance company. The artwork features a young boy dressed in a classic early football uniform, complete with a red sweater showcasing a bold "H" emblem for Harvard University, quilted canvas padded pants, long red wool socks, and leather cleat boots. He is carrying a large, melon-shaped vintage football under his right arm while examining an apple held in his left hand. These highly collectible cards were originally produced as color advertisements for various businesses at the turn of the 20th century—most notably for theHome Insurance Company of New York. This card is unusual in that it is for a competing insurance company.... "Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Co. of California, San Francisco." -- With a Sacramento agency imprint:"J.M. Crabbe, 1006 4th St., Sacramento, Cal."J.M. Crabbe Insurance, Sacramento, CA, is closely tied to the address / historic building in which it operated:Location: The California Fruit Exchange BuildingThe address 1006 4th Street is home to the California Fruit Building (originally the California Fruit Exchange Building), located at the corner of 4th and J Streets in downtown Sacramento.
  • The Pioneer High-Rise: Constructed between 1914 and 1915, it was Sacramento’s first skyscraper and its very first concrete-poured building. For a brief period, the 10-story property held the title of the tallest building west of the Mississippi.
  • Commercial Hub: Throughout the 20th century, the building served as a core office hub for a variety of local merchants, trade associations, and independent service firms—including J.M. Crabbe's insurance agency.
J.M. Crabbe Insurance (John M. Crabbe) operated as an independent insurance agent and broker.
  • Early Beginnings: Records indicate that J.M. Crabbe originally established roots in the late 19th century as an insurance agent farther inland (with ties to the Salt Lake City and regional mining booms of the 1890s) before anchoring his business footprint in California.
  • Mid-Century Era: By the mid-20th century (the 1950s and 1960s), J.M. Crabbe Insurance was operating out of the California Fruit Building, specializing in local commercial, property, and casualty insurance lines for Sacramento's growing post-war business sector. Like many independent brokers of the era, the firm eventually consolidated or phased out as larger national insurance conglomerates began to dominate the market.
The Building TodayIf you visit 1006 4th Street today, you won't find the insurance agency. Following an extensive multi-million dollar adaptive reuse transformation, the historic California Fruit Building formally reopened as The Exchange Sacramento, a 100-room luxury boutique hotel under Hilton's Curio Collection. To See More of the BEST 19th Century Cards Click: (( MORE GREAT CARDS ))
