The Ritter Dental Manufacturing Company of Rochester, New York, produced dental equipment from the late nineteenth century onward. These alternating current controllers were manufactured in the early twentieth century to regulate electrical current for dental drills and instruments. They were engineered with heavy-duty resistance coils and rheostats housed in metal canisters to safely step down wall power for delicate dental motors.

Dentists used these heavy floor or bench controllers in their operating rooms to govern the speed of foot-controlled or belt-driven dental engines. The operator manipulated the internal resistance using switches to achieve precise rotational control during drilling and polishing procedures. As electrical grids standardized and dental units evolved with built-in solid-state controls, these heavy rheostats became obsolete and were phased out of dental practices.
