YOUHAVE TO BE WARPED TO WEAVE
FibercraftScience Fiction Pun Button
One large 2.25" pinback button with thephrase You Have to be Warped to Weave, with the word ‘Warped’written in classic Star Trek font.
Warp and weft are the two basiccomponents used in weaving to turn thread or yarn into fabric. Thelengthwise or longitudinal warp yarns are held stationary in tensionon a frame or loom while the transverse weft (sometimes woof) isdrawn through and inserted over-and-under the warp. Warped is also asynonym for strange or bizarre, and handicrafts such as weaving arenow considered eccentricities rather than as a necessity in order toput clothes on one’s back.
Did you know that some of the earlycomputers were woven?
The guts of NASA’s pioneering Apollocomputer were handwoven like a quilt. The circuits and programs ofthe Apollo flight computers were also woven by hand, by women at aRaytheon factory in Waltham, Massachusetts. They sat at sophisticatedlooms, using long needles with wire attached to them instead ofthread, carefully weaving the wiring that was the programming of thecomputers.
The result was core rope memory, is aform of read-only memory (ROM). Some programmers nicknamed thefinished product LOL memory, for Little Old Lady memory. Everysingle 1 and 0 in the computer’s memory required a wire in exactlythe right place. It took dozens of women eight weeks to assemble it,meticulously, by hand.
Wear this button while organizing thepunchcards for your Jacquard loom, while boldly sewing where no manhas sewn before, or while adding warp nacelles to your shuttle. Great as a gift for the weaver in your life!
