Yard Long WWI US Camp Cody Deming NM, Sept. 1917 - LARGE: 55" by 10" - Unframed:
$55.00

Camp Cody, named after Buffalo Bill Cody was used by the US Army during WWI from 1917 to 1918. Initially it housed troops intended to fend off a possible Mexican invasion by Pancho Villa. It was located right near the US-Mexican border. When WWI broke out, it was the site on which the the resident troops and others brought in, organized into units to fight in WWI.
This yard Long photo from September 1917 shows us the home of the: "4th Nebraska and 3rd Minnesota (spelled "Minesota")Inf./ Camp "Cody"/ Deming NM/ Sept. 1917." (See the inscription on the photo at the bottom left.)
The photographers who took the photo have left their mark on the bottom right of the photo: "Photo 'Copyrighted'/ byJ. U. Medley & I. Shulman/ El Paso, Tex."
The 4th Nebraska Infantry became part of the 34th Infantry Division and was sent to France where they saw some of the most bloody battles of the end of the war.
There were manyphotos taken at Camp Cody -- it was a well-documented camp regardless of its short life. Shortly before this photograph was take, the Spanish-American War took place. Photographers flooded to that war and it remans a well-documented and much photographed conflict.
This yardlong offers yet another perspective on that early US Training Camp. It was taken only months after the United States entered WWI, when the troops at the camp were uncertain as to their tasks and their unit's placement in the war. Their focus had been shifted from a hostel Mexico to a hostel Germany and the conflict across the ocean.
