William Boyd Allison (1829–1908), the long-serving Iowa Republican who sat in the U.S. House (3rd District, 1863–1871) and then the Senate (1873–1908). He chaired the Senate Republican Conference from 1897 until his death and was a leading member of the “Senate Four.” He held the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel on the staff of Iowa Governor Samuel J. Kirkwood during the Civil War and helped raise several Iowa regiments.He is best remembered today being one of the Big Four.).
