This historic artwork is a silhouette portrait by the early American profile artist William Bache, depicting Col. Michel Fortier II. The subject, Colonel Michel Fortier II, was a notable figure of Louisiana during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, living through the dramatic transition of the region from Spanish and French colonial rule into the United States via the Louisiana Purchase. Silhouettes of this era served as an accessible yet refined form of portraiture before the widespread adoption of photography, capturing the likeness of community leaders, military figures, and everyday citizens alike.
Portraiture of this period was deeply connected to personal identity, civic duty, and the commemoration of prominent local figures. As a military officer and prominent citizen, Col. Michel Fortier II represented the leadership class that navigated the complex geopolitical shifts of early New Orleans and the broader Gulf Coast. Silhouettes offered a stark, minimalist representation that focused entirely on the distinctive contours of the subject's profile, emphasizing status and recognition through sheer outline rather than elaborate painterly detail.
