Watermelon Elbaite Tourmaline 8.8 grams 1.7x1.7x1.6 cm From the Tourmaline King Mine, Pala, San Diego Co., California (2022-2023 prod)This is a nice sized blocky crystal showing a pink core, a green rind, and some colorless achroite zoning as well as minor lepidolite inclusions with matrix. What makes this crystal unique is how it has clearly broken and rehealed many times in the highly tectonically active Southern California ground where it grew, showing only one truly gemmy, but still scarred, crystal face with a largely opaque interior. From contemporary production at the King Mine, this came out of the ground around 2022-2023.
