Olive drab wool military side cap featuring distinctive silver-and-black braided piping, dark interior lining and leather sweatband.
The silver-and-black piping is particularly important. During the WWII period, this piping combination was associated with U.S. Army Warrant Officers and Flight Officers, distinguishing these caps from the gold-and-black piping normally associated with commissioned officers.
The cap is constructed from quality olive drab wool with a fully lined interior and substantial brown leather sweatband.
Garrison caps were one of the most recognizable pieces of U.S. Army headgear of the WWII era and were widely known as overseas caps. In the Army Air Forces they were also commonly called flight caps.
No insignia is presently attached, and no clearly readable maker, size, owner identification or date was found during examination.
Because no individual provenance or branch insignia accompanies the cap, it is being identified conservatively from its construction, materials and distinctive piping rather than attributed to a particular serviceman or Army branch.
