This is an original M5 flak helmet, the first model introduced in 1943 by the U.S. Army Air Forces to protect bomber crews from shrapnel injuries during high-altitude missions. Designed to be worn over the standard leather flying helmet, the M3 offered vital protection without compromising communication.Design & Features

• Steel shell with distinctive M1-style profile
• Hinged armored ear flaps to accommodate aircrew headsets
• Original canvas chin strap with snap closure for quick release
• Retains original paint finish, liner, and strap. Please note that one side of strap was separated, see picture.
• Felt pads missing, minor surface rust spotting consistent with age

Historical Significance

• Replaced bulkier headgear and set the standard for later models
