This is a rare example of a WWII-era Imperial Japanese Army officer’s flag saber — a specially designed sword with a red-and-white signal flag attached to the blade.
Unlike standard military sabers, this piece features a hole in the blade to mount a silk flag, allowing it to function as both a symbol of command and a visual tool for issuing orders. While often associated with military parades and formal ceremonies, some accounts suggest these swords were also used during the chaos of “banzai charges” — when officers led troops into battle, raising the flag high to rally and guide their men.
This particular saber is likely a privately commissioned piece, reflecting the officer’s personal taste and budget. The handle is elegantly decorated with a cherry blossom motif, and a long black tassel remains attached. The blade shows wear consistent with use, and the flag—faded but intact—still carries powerful visual impact. The sword comes with its original scabbard and a protective cloth cover.
These flag sabers are extremely scarce. Few survived the war, and even fewer with the original flag still present. A striking artifact that blurs the line between ceremonial display and battlefield leadership.
