USS Savannah Damage Control
11 Sept. 1943
This is a nice reproduction of an original WW2 photograph showingfire fighting efforts on the USS Savannah after she was hit by a German radio control bomb. Size is about 4\" x 6\".
A radio-controlled Fritz X glide-bomb had been released at asafe distance by a high-flying German warplane and it exploded 49ft(15m) distance from the USS Philadelphia. The Savannahincreased her speed to 20kn (23mph, 37km/h) as a Dornier Do217 K-2 bomber approached from out of the sun. The USAAF\'s P-38 Lightnings andthe Savannah\'s anti-aircraft gunners, tracking this warplane at18,700ft (5,700m), failed to stop the Fritz X bomb, trailing astream of smoke. The missile pierced right through the armored turret roof ofthe No. 3 gun turret of the Savannah, passed through three decks intothe lower ammunition-handling room, where it exploded, blowing a gaping hole inher keel, and also tearing open a seam in the cruiser\'s port side. For at least30 minutes, secondary explosions in the turret and its ammunition-supply roomshampered any fire-fighting efforts. 197 US Sailors were killed.
