Offered here is an exceptional, entirely untouched, and historically documented U.S. M1917 "Doughboy" combat helmet from World War I. This extraordinary piece of military heritage features an authentic, hand-painted insignia on the exterior shell and clear, crisp attribution stenciled to the interior brim. Unlike common anonymous surplus items, this artifact is definitively attributed to a verifiable combat veteran who participated in some of the most grueling actions on the Western Front.
Unit Attribution & Provenance
The interior steel brim retains its original hand-painted unit designation reading "Co. A. 105", indicating Company A, 105th Infantry Regiment. The regiment was a cornerstone of the historic 27th Infantry Division ("The New York Division").
The brim is prominently stenciled with the initials "W. J. R.", matching the military personnel rosters for Private William J. Rampe, a New York native who served honorably in Company A throughout the conflict. Private Rampe survived the war, returned home to Sullivan County, New York, in early 1919 with his division, and ultimately passed away in 1962. Because he brought his equipment home with him, this piece survived in remarkable, unmolested condition.
The 27th Division Combat Record
As part of the 105th Infantry, Private Rampe and this very helmet were thrust into momentous historical engagements. Operating under British tactical command in Northern France, the 27th Division was tasked with fracturing the formidable Hindenburg Line in September 1918. This brutal, decisive assault broke the back of the German defensive network and directly accelerated the end of the war.
Insignia & Condition Details
• Exterior Insignia: The front of the helmet features a wonderfully preserved, hand-painted 27th Division insignia. The classic interlocking "NY" monogram is rendered in dark paint framed by a vibrant, bold red circle. The paint exhibits beautiful, authentic crazing and a mellowed patina consistent with age.
• Shell & Finish: The steel shell retains a high percentage of its original factory olive drab textured paint, displaying honest combat wear, minor surface scuffs, and light oxidation that underscores its battlefield heritage.
• Interior & Liner: The interior components remain remarkably complete. The black oilcloth liner is present alongside the internal felt padding and a portion of the original leather chinstrap assembly, including the secure metal buckle loops.
Collector's Note
This is a premier, museum-grade investment piece for serious collectors of World War I militaria, New York historical artifacts, or named group attributions. The synchronization of the exterior division paint, the interior company stencil, and the verifiable service of Private William J. Rampe makes this an elite addition to any collection.
