Original hinged presentation frame containing twoportrait photographs: a decorated World War I-era U.S. Army lieutenant coloneland a seated lady believed to be his wife.
The folding presentation frame measuresapproximately 7.5 x 9.5 x 1.25 inches closed. Both portraits are signed “AlfredJonniaux copy.” Alfred Jonniaux was a Belgian portrait artist who later workedin London; his papers are preserved by the Smithsonian Institution.
My research through a WWI website indicates the officer was a lieutenantcolonel (silver oak leaf insignia) serving with the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps. The shoulder insignia appears to identify the 85th Division (\"CusterDivision\"), and the armband suggests service on the division staff.
The officer wears four medals. The first appearsto be the Belgian Croix de Guerre, the second likely a French Croix de Guerre, the third a U.S. World War I Victory Medal with three campaign clasps, and thefourth possibly a Mexican Service Medal, though identification is notguaranteed and should be considered the seller\'s research opinion.
The portraits remain housed in their originalfolding display frame with gilt-trimmed interior surrounds and glass coverings. An unusual and well-presented military display piece combining both militaryand family history.
