WWI 1918 Sgt Charles Anson 329th Field Artillery Promotion & Discharge Michigan

A remarkable three-document WWI military archive telling the complete wartime story of one Michigan soldier — from his first promotion stateside to his battlefield advancement in France to his honorable discharge after the Armistice.

This exceptional grouping follows Sergeant Charles P. Anson of Battery "A," 329th Field Artillery, National Army through the full arc of his World War I service, documented in three original Army of the United States of America appointment and discharge papers.

Document 1 — Promotion to CorporalDated February 3, 1918, this appointment document promotes Private Charles P. Anson to the rank of Corporal, signed by Vivian M. Conerey, Commanding Officer at Camp Custer, Battle Creek, Michigan — one of the Army's largest WWI training installations.

Document 2 — Promotion to SergeantDated September 18, 1918 — just seven weeks before the Armistice — this appointment promotes Corporal Charles P. Anson to Sergeant, again signed by Vivian M. Conerey. Critically, this document was issued at Pont-à-Mousson, France — placing Anson on the Western Front during the final, decisive months of the war. Pont-à-Mousson was an active sector of the Meuse-Moselle front, and the 329th Field Artillery was in the thick of it.

Document 3 — Honorable DischargeIssued at Camp Custer, Michigan and signed by Major George M. Lathrop, Commanding, this honorable discharge released Sergeant Anson under War Department Circular 106, December 3, 1918 — the massive post-Armistice demobilization order that began returning millions of American soldiers to civilian life. The discharge includes Anson's physical description and personal details.

Why this grouping is exceptional:

  • Three documents, one complete story — promotion, battlefield advancement, and honorable discharge are rarely found together for a single soldier
  • The geographic arc is remarkable: Camp Custer, Michigan → Pont-à-Mousson, France → Camp Custer, Michigan — the full WWI journey in paper
  • Pont-à-Mousson is a historically significant location — an active front sector in the final weeks of the war, making the September 1918 promotion document particularly compelling
  • The 329th Field Artillery is a well-documented Michigan National Army unit with an active regimental history — serious collectors and genealogists will recognize it immediately
  • Same commanding officer signs two of the three documents — Vivian M. Conerey appears both stateside and in France, adding an unexpected thread of continuity
  • Enlistment record included — adds physical description, wounds, and character assessment that bring Anson to life as an individual

Condition: Good to very good for age. Toning consistent with over 100 years of age. All three documents legible and intact. Some fold lines present. and heavy paper is slightly rounding.

A premier piece for collectors of WWI Michigan military history, 329th Field Artillery regimental history, Camp Custer ephemera, or Western Front documentation.
