Original WWI-era National Society for Adequate Defense patriotic award medal, dating to approximately the 1917 period.
The medal features an impressive high-relief classical design with a female allegorical figure surrounded by symbols of knowledge and enlightenment, including a globe, owl, books and lamp.
The reverse is marked:
“GOLD MEDAL
AWARDED TO
BY THE NATIONAL SOCIETY
FOR ADEQUATE DEFENCE
FOR DOING MUCH
TO ADVANCE
OUR LOVE
FOR
FLAG AND COUNTRY”
Similar documented examples are known with a 1917-dated suspension bar, placing this medal within the World War I preparedness and American patriotic movement.
Measures approximately 1 5/8 inches in diameter.
Condition: Original suspension/ribbon assembly is missing. There is visible loss/damage along the upper rim where the suspension hardware was formerly attached, along with surface wear, oxidation, discoloration and patina consistent with age. Please review all photographs carefully for condition.
“Gold Medal” is the designation appearing on the medal; the metal content has not been tested and is not represented as solid gold.
