A 10x8" vintage photo from a large collection of hand signed photographs of World War 2 P-47 Thunderbolt Aces that we acquired from a major sale house.
The collection was filled with the autographs of hundreds of fighter pilots gathered over a period of decades, and we are happy to guarantee/warranty the authenticity of this signature.
Most of the photographs from this collection were later reprints or digital reproductions from signing events.
Note: in some cases pilots used Nazi symbols to indicate kills on their planes. Since prohibits us from showing such symbols in photos we have covered them up (pink) in the photos posted. The photo you receive will be the complete image, of course. Professionally packaged in a rigid mailer for safe delivery.
Photo Overview
Lt Col Daniel E. “Dan” Hillman, a decorated P-47 Thunderbolt ace of the U.S. 9th Air Force, smiles from the cockpit of his personal Jug (serial 42-26571) with his name and crew chiefs S/Sgt W. A. Allen and Sgt R. L. Henry neatly stenciled below. The crisp, later-generation 8x10 shows the aircraft parked at a forward fighter strip in liberated France during late 1944, and is boldly autographed in blue ink “Col Dan Hillman” across the fuselage panel.
Hillman scored five confirmed aerial victories with the 368th Fighter Group, earning the Silver Star and commanding the 395th Fighter Squadron. P-47 units like his flew vital fighter-bomber missions that crippled German armor during the Battle of the Bulge and spearheaded the advance to the Rhine. Print analysis: Resin-coated glossy paper with modern C-41 lab edge code indicates a late 20th-century reproduction—Type 4—made decades after the 1944 negative, likely c1990s, personally signed in that period.
