Superb WW1 Royal Flying Corps RAF 1A Armstrong Whitworth Propeller Boss Clock c.1918
The RAF (Royal Aircraft Factory) 1A is a British air-cooled, V-8 engine developed for aircraft use during World War I. Based on a French design, it was developed at the RAF (not Royal Air Force) and built by six different British companies including Daimler, Rolls-Royce and Wolseley Motors Limited. It was fitted to several aircraft but this particular propeller boss was almost certainly connected to an Armstrong Whitworth, a WW1 general-purpose biplane.
The solid mahogany prop boss is well presented on a section of a propeller blade and fitted with a fully functional period winding mechanical clock, which is removable to make winding up easier, you can also do this from the reverse if you have nibble fingers. The front has several pieces of embossed information including the engine type, and the original bolt holes are fitted with spent brass cartridges, overall it measures 19”W x 7”D x 12”H.
Fabulous piece of original trench art!
