Today I am offering this fabulous vintage tile from the high quality Villeroy and Boch porcelain company.
It features an image of the flowering plant, Agrimonia Eupatoria, from the Botanica collection which was produced from 1976-2008.
It's a little bit confusing because this tile is marked Made in France.
V&B is typically marked Made in Germany.
There was a short period of time after the Nazis were defeated in WWII when France occupied that region of Germany.
During this period, from about 1946-1955, products from Villeroy & Boch were marked Made in France.
So I am not sure if the company repurposed older blank tiles to use with the Botanica pattern, or how this exactly came to be.
It is indeed marked on the underside as follows:
Villeroy & Boch
Made in France 51
NF DIN BS
EN 159 Blll
26 C l 92
(I don't know if the 51 means 1951 ?)
This is a white tile measuring 6" x 6" square. It thin, about ¼".
I don't think it is hand-painted. Most likely it is transferware.
Agrimonia eupatoria is a species of agrimony that is often referred to as common agrimony, church steeples, or sticklewort.
It has useful medicinal elements besides being decorative.
This piece is in great vintage pre-owned condition with only minimal signs of wear. A couple of very small chips in the lower right corner as pictured.
Otherwise, it's bright and glossy and has no cracks or crazing.
It can be mounted into a tray or frame and used as a trivet, or actually set into a wall, such as a backsplash.
At the time of this posting I have 2 of these available in the same condition.
