This vintage MCM Fratelli Fanciullacci Sgraffito Amphora Handle Vase from Italy in the 1950s/60s is a stunning piece of Italian Modernist, Brutalist, and Studio Art Pottery. Handmade with carvings, raised relief, and a glazed finish, this large vase features geometric and floral patterns in terracotta orange, textured gray, and white. Signed and numbered by the artist, this unique piece is perfect for all occasions and would make a beautiful addition to any mid-century modern, boho chic, or brutalist home decor. The upper half features a rich, terra-cotta orange band decorated with hand carved in sized shields, swords and stylized leaves using the traditional sgraffito technique. The bulbous lower body goes to heavily texture, geometric floral petal motif, outlined in contrasting, grey and cream glazes.
True to handmade, earthenware nature of mid-century Italian pottery, there are typical “flea bite” glaze flakes or tiny production imperfections on the raised edges which only adds to it’s authentic retro charm. Please view all pictures. (Note some flea bites are circled in pictures and the right handle has been repaired: shown in pictures.)
Care instructions recommend cleaning with a damp cloth or warm water, making it easy to maintain.
