Vtg Hand Carved Appalachian Solid Maple Wood Carving Double Sided Religious 10+"
Vintage hand carved solid hardwood sculpture featuring a serene double sided devotional portrait: the bearded face of what our research shows to be Jesus Christ on one side, and a veiled face (traditionally depicting the Virgin Mary) on the reverse.
Carved from a solid block of native maple, the artisan utilized the vertical corner edge as the bridge of the nose and center facial ridge, giving both sides dimension and texture. Made in Charleston, West Virginia (remnants of original studio paper hangtag included showing ZIP code 25314 and handwritten wood designation).
Stands 10 1/2" tall x 4 1/4" x 3 3/4". In very good vintage condition with an aged patina. The wood grain, tooling marks, and surface characteristics remain intact. The original paper tag is partially worn/torn as shown in photos, but retains legible fields verifying wood type, finish, and West Virginia origin. Please inspect all photos closely for exact surface condition and natural grain variations. And...Don't forget to watch the video as it gives the best representation of this one-of-a-kind carving.
Truly a beautiful piece of Appalachian history!
