The roses in the crown are individually carved — each petal separated, the blooms sitting fully in the round rather than pressed flat against the veil. At 13 inches, this is detail work that required a different tool than the one that shaped the figure itself.
The reverse is fully painted and finished throughout — the veil drapes completely around the back with the same tonal painting as the front, the child's curls are worked and gilded on the reverse side, the gold leaf accents on the mantle continue around where the figure turns away from view. This was not made to stand against a wall.
The painting on this piece is applied in multiple tones within each color area — the mantle is not a flat wash but built up with shadow and highlight by hand, the skin tones on the faces are layered. The roses at the crown are individually painted petal by petal. The gold leaf is selective and deliberate: the mantle edge, the child's wrapping, specific accent points — not applied overall, but placed.
These pieces required two craftsmen to complete — the carver who shaped the linden, and the specialist who applied the polychrome painting and gold leaf by hand. Both trades are disappearing in Val Gardena.
ANRI ceased all production in 2018. Pieces like this will never be made again, and become harder to find every year. The Sculpture:
