Unusual vintage hand-carved bone bird sculpture from the Nicholas Mitropoulos estate collection of Edgecomb, Maine.
This striking little sculpture depicts a highly stylized long-legged wading bird — likely intended as a heron, crane or egret — with its wings dramatically outstretched.
The natural coloration and surface characteristics of the material are visible throughout the carving and add considerably to its character.
The artist has reduced the bird to an elegant, almost modernist form: an elongated neck and bill, extremely slender legs, sweeping wings and a compact body, creating a surprisingly graceful silhouette from every angle.
The figure came from the Nicholas Mitropoulos estate collection in Edgecomb, Maine, along with a varied collection of Native American-related, Asian, Himalayan, ethnographic and international folk-art objects.
