14.5-inch Petatillo master charger plate. Crafted in the celebrated pottery hub of Tlaquepaque (Jalisco, Mexico) during the golden era of Mexican tourist pottery (circa 1930s–1940s), this large-scale platter is an exceptional showcase of traditional craftsmanship.
The center of the plate features a hand-painted narrative scene depicting a traditional worker carrying goods through a desert landscape, framed by stylized trees, multi-layered mountains, and native cacti. The scene is set against an incredibly intricate, hand-inked cross-hatched background—the defining signature of the painstaking Petatillo technique (designed to mimic a woven petate straw mat).
The wide rim is decorated with a vibrant, multi-layered geometric and wave border in a classic regional palette of terracotta, forest green, cream, and deep slate blue.
The reverse side bears the authentic, period-correct oval "MADE IN MEXICO" stamped maker's mark.
Features a rare, integrated molded clay hanging loop built directly into the reverse rim, complete with a vintage rope tie for secure wall display.
Excellent vintage condition overall for its age and delicate medium. Shows beautiful, authentic age glaze crackle and typical minor firing irregularities/glaze pops on the reverse, which are standard for early hand-kilned redware and confirm its handmade provenance.
No major cracks or structural repairs.
