Its whole job is to move air across a room, and it has been doing that job since before the man who gave it to me could walk.
A Zephyr AirKooler by Wright Industries of Lisbon, Ohio — the painted steel version with the teardrop base, three blades, and a wire cage bent from the era when a cage was a suggestion rather than a liability shield. The cast badge on the hub reads ZEPHYR over AIRKOOLER, exactly as it left the factory.
Wright made these from the late thirties into the forties, mostly in chrome and aluminum for the showroom and painted steel for everyone else. The chrome gooseneck versions get written up as Machine Age design objects. This is the other one — the one that actually sat on a kitchen table in August and earned its keep.
THREE GENERATIONS, ONE FAN
This came from my partner's father, who is pushing eighty. I asked him where he got it.
"Was my parents'," he said. Then: "Makes a noise."
Fans do that, I thought and said at the same time. Bit of oil oughtta do it.
So that's the provenance, all of it: it belonged to his mother and father, it has been in one family the whole time, and the man handing it over is doing it himself, while he's still here to say where it came from. That's rarer in this business than the fan is.
CONDITION, WITHOUT FLATTERY
Original blue paint throughout, worn and chipped where eighty-odd years of hands and moves put wear. Surface rust across the cage and the blade edges. Small yellow factory decal still on the base. Badge crisp and fully legible.
It runs. It also makes a noise, which on a fan this old almost always means dry bearings wanting oil, not a dying motor — but I am telling you what I know rather than what I hope. It has not been serviced, rewired, oiled, or cleaned up, and it is priced as an unrestored fan and not a working appliance.
Have the cord checked before you plug it in and left running. Cloth-era wiring is the one thing on a fan like this that doesn't age gracefully.
Return Policy Thirty days. They're mine, not yours.
People read a return window as the buyer's trial. It isn't. It's mine. For thirty days you are deciding whether I described this honestly, and I'd rather you decide slowly and be certain.
Send it back for any reason, or none. Nobody will ask you to justify it, photograph it, or make a case to a stranger about your own money.
If I got it wrong, I make it right and I pay the freight both ways. If you simply changed your mind, I pay it anyway. No one should lose money for being honest about what they want.
WHY THE POLICY IS THIS SHORT
Because the alternative is writing for the one person in a hundred, and making the other ninety-nine read it.
Long policies are written by people who expect to be robbed. I've stopped expecting it.
Shipping Policy Steel and wire. Bends before it breaks.
The motor housing can take a knock. The cage can't — a crushed cage on a fan like this is the difference between original and ruined, and no amount of careful bending puts it back.
So it ships braced, insured, and tracked, packed by a man who has opened a box that wasn't and knows exactly what that costs. Until it is in your hands it is still mine. Lost or damaged in transit is my problem and never yours — you won't file, you won't chase, you won't have to prove your own loss to somebody in a call center. You'll hear from me before you've noticed it's late.
A purchase gets returned. This only ever gets shipped back.
Who I Sell To Nobody owns anything this old.
You hold it for a while, you try not to be the one who ruins it, and you hand it on. That's the whole arrangement. I'm an interval, and so are you, and so were the two people in Ohio or wherever it was who bought it new.
Twice in my life somebody turned down better money than mine to put something in my hands instead. Neither of them explained. Both of them were right, and it took me years to understand what I'd been handed along with the thing itself.
So I do the same now. Some of what I have is never listed. It sits under the bench waiting for whoever ought to have it, and if that person is slow arriving, it waits. Neither of us is in a hurry.
None of which makes me a curator. I'm a man with a truck and a storage problem who got lucky about what he cares about.
So the only thing I ask of you is good faith. Ask anything, take your time, tell me plainly what you're going to do with it. Nearly everyone passes without ever noticing they were asked.
The few who don't, I let go without a word. There was never anything here for them.
The Fine Print The words are mine. The risk, too.
No template. Nothing lifted from a better-funded seller. Not a single clause written by someone whose job would be protecting me from you.
There is no paragraph seven. No asterisk to hide behind. Only what I said I would do, and whether I do it.
One exception, stated plainly rather than buried: this is a nearly eighty-year-old electrical appliance sold as an unrestored vintage object. Have it looked at before you run it. I'd say the same thing to a friend.
A short contract is what two people write when they both mean it.
About Me For thirty years I made claims on behalf of people who paid me to make them. Now I sell things that make their own.
It pays worse. It asks more. It is the first work I've done that I could describe to a stranger without first deciding how to describe it.
That isn't the same as being good at it. I overpay. I miss things. I have twice sold something I should have kept and thought about it for a year.
I buy from estates, from widows, from men clearing out a friend's shop with their jaw set against the job. I clean what needs cleaning and leave everything else, because the marks on a thing are the record of its use and erasing them is not mine to do. Then I go looking for the next set of hands.

The men who owned things like this kept them in the drawer. They labeled the bins. They put a thing back where it went, every time, for forty years, and then they died and somebody had to stand in the cellar and decide what all of it was worth.
That's usually where I come in, and it's the part of this work I've stopped apologizing for. Everything I sell outlived whoever loved it most. The only question left is landfill or bench.
This one goes to a bench or it doesn't go.
