PAIR OF VINTAGE WWI TRENCH ART SHELL-CASING VASES — APPROX. 8” TALL
This is a matching pair of vintage trench-art shell-casing vases, transformed from military shell casings into decorative works of folk art.
These have the look and construction associated with World War I-era trench art, when spent artillery shell casings were repurposed and worked into decorative objects by soldiers, veterans, and craftsmen. Museum collections document WWI trench-art vases made from artillery shell casings with shaped and scalloped/flared rims, and surviving examples from the WWI period are well documented.
WHAT YOU GET:
* 2 matching shell-casing vases
* Approximately 8 inches tall each
* Aged brass/bronze-colored metal construction
* Distinctive fluted/faceted bodies
* Decorative scalloped/flared rims
* Shaped and stepped lower sections
* Heavy circular bases
* Matching pair with excellent display presence
* Original aged surface/patina
The workmanship is what makes these so damn interesting. These aren’t simply ordinary modern decorative vases — they’re representative of the trench-art tradition of transforming military shell casings into decorative objects.
The combination of the shaped shell bodies, worked rims, faceted sections and substantial bases gives this pair a fantastic military-history / folk-art / trench-art appearance.
CONDITION
Vintage/antique condition with age-related wear.
Both pieces show an attractive aged surface with patina, oxidation, discoloration, scratches, scuffs and handling wear consistent with their age and history.
I have NOT polished these, so the buyer gets them in their current aged condition.
Please study ALL photographs carefully. The photographs are part of the description and show the actual pair you will receive.
IMPORTANT IDENTIFICATION NOTE
I am listing these as WWI trench-art shell-casing vases based on their construction and comparison with documented WWI trench-art examples, including matching examples with scalloped/flared rims and approximately 8-inch dimensions.
However, I am not claiming a specific artillery caliber, shell manufacturer, country of origin, exact production year, or military unit because I do not have sufficiently clear readable markings from the photographs to establish those details.
If the markings on the bottoms can eventually be identified, that could provide additional information about the original shell casings.
