Lt. Col. Benjamin H. Purcell Jr. holds the solemn distinction of being the highest-ranking U.S. Army Prisoner of War (POW) captured during the Vietnam War. On February 8, 1968, his helicopter was shot down by enemy fire near Quảng Trị. He endured 1,874 days (over 5.5 years) of captivity, surviving brutal conditions and solitary confinement, and even staging two daring escape attempts before his release during Operation Homecoming on March 27, 1973.
