This Tonalá stylepottery charger or large plate with exuberant and stylized floral designs were the specialty of a small group of decorators who hand-painted mostly large pieces, as this style demanded large surfaces to allow for the flourish and brashness of the tropical subject matter. This piece is called "opaque" ratherthan burnished because it lacks the sheen of burnished wares.
Tonalá style pottery is a highly collectible type of oldMexican pottery, and this is a good example with its bold and colorfulbrushwork (Reference: McMenamin, Donna. 1996. Popular Arts of Mexico: 1850-1950. Schiffer Publishing Ltd., pp. 72-86).

Condition: VeryGood. No cracks or repairs. Has very minor wear, scratchesand paint loss as expected with age and use.
