Beautiful mid-20th century Asian hand-painted lacquerware wooden lidded box, featuring an unusual tall pedestal form with removable domed lid and turned finial.

The entire exterior is richly decorated with repeating floral, foliate and geometric motifs in red, black, yellow/gold, green and grey tones. Concentric decorative bands surround the lid, rim, cylindrical body and broad pedestal base, creating a striking traditional folk-art appearance.

The vessel appears to be lathe-turned wood, with turning marks particularly visible inside. The removable lid has a substantial turned handle/finial, while the interior has been left largely natural and undecorated.

The exact original function is unknown. It could have served as a decorative storage, keepsake, ceremonial or powder container.
