Offered is a wonderful vintage handmade miniature building representing the historic coquina construction style of St. Augustine, Florida.
This highly detailed piece features a coquina shell-covered exterior with wooden shutters, a multi-pane window, miniature birds, plants, pottery, baskets and numerous tiny decorative objects arranged around the front of the building.
The piece retains its original red COQUINA information label, which explains the historical significance of coquina and its use in early St. Augustine construction. The label specifically describes the miniature buildings as representing the construction style of St. Augustine and discusses the Spanish quarrying of coquina on Anastasia Island.
Coquina was an important historic building material in St. Augustine, with numerous surviving historic structures constructed from or incorporating this native shellstone.
This is a charming example of Florida folk art, St. Augustine history and miniature craftsmanship, and would make an interesting addition to a Florida, St. Augustine, architectural or miniature collection.
