Vintage Solid Silver Hanukkah Dreidel with Hebrew Lettering:
$700.00

A charming and unusually substantial vintage Hanukkah dreidel fashioned in solid silver, richly decorated with Hebrew lettering, scrolling ornament, and finely modeled details. Unlike the cleaner, more geometric character of many modern silver dreidels, this example draws upon a distinctly Historicist decorative vocabulary, combining traditional Jewish symbolism with ornament recalling older European silverwork. The dreidel is formed around a compact, nearly square body with softly rounded corners, surmounted by a long cylindrical spinning handle. Below, the body narrows through a short ornamental collar into a ribbed, acorn-like spinning point, giving the piece a pleasing sense of proportion and a considerably more sculptural appearance than the simple pointed terminals ordinarily encountered on dreidels. The solid silver construction lends the small object an appreciable visual and physical weight. Each of the four sides is centered by one of the traditional Hebrew letters נ (Nun), ג (Gimel), ה (Hei), and ש (Shin), together abbreviating the phrase נס גדול היה שם — “Nes Gadol Hayah Sham,” or “A great miracle happened there.” The phrase refers to the miracle of Hanukkah and the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. The presence of ש (Shin) rather than the פ (Pei) commonly used on Israeli dreidels follows the traditional Diaspora formula. The Hebrew letters are rendered in bold raised relief against recessed, finely textured grounds, creating a strong contrast that makes each character immediately legible. Each letter occupies a framed cartouche integrated into the body of the dreidel, giving the four sides the appearance of miniature heraldic panels. The darker patination retained within the recessed fields further emphasizes the bright raised lettering and surrounding borders.Particularly attractive is the dense scrolling foliate decoration extending around the upper and lower edges of the body. Small C-scrolls, curling leaves, and arabesque-like motifs form continuous ornamental bands around the dreidel, while the corners provide natural transitions from one lettered panel to the next. The decoration gives the piece a distinctly traditional appearance and suggests the influence of late Historicist and Rococo Revival silver ornament, interpreted on the intimate scale of a Jewish ceremonial-season object. The top and bottom are treated with equal attention. Around the base of the handle is a raised, vertically fluted collar that visually anchors the slender stem to the heavier body. Beneath the lettered panels is an openwork-like ornamental register composed of repeated oval and leaf-shaped elements, terminating in the deeply fluted spinning point. One end face is additionally embellished with a radiating shell or fan-shaped motif surrounded by scrolling foliage, demonstrating that the maker intended virtually every visible surface to participate in the decorative scheme. The elongated silver handle provides sufficient leverage for spinning while also contributing to the object's elegant vertical silhouette. Its comparatively plain surface creates a deliberate visual counterpoint to the densely decorated body below. Traces of use and naturally darkened areas of patination accentuate the relief decoration, lending the silver an appealing sense of age and emphasizing the hand-finished character of the piece.1.36ozt
