VINTAGE SCHRADE-WALDEN 148S HUNTSMAN / DEER SKINNER – MADE IN USA – STAGLON HANDLE – LEATHER SHEATH
A CLASSIC PIECE OF AMERICAN HUNTING HISTORY
Before today’s world of mass-produced imported knives, companies like Schrade-Walden were making dependable hunting knives for American outdoorsmen.
This vintage Schrade-Walden Model 148 hunting knife is a wonderful example of that tradition, featuring the distinctive textured Staglon handle, upswept hunting blade, metal guard, curved bird’s-head pommel, and a handsome brown leather sheath.
This isn’t just a vintage knife. It’s a reminder of an era when hunting knives were practical companions on deer hunts, camping trips, and adventures in the outdoors.
THE HISTORY BEHIND THIS KNIFE
Schrade-Walden was a respected American cutlery manufacturer with roots dating back to the early 1900s. Its knives were manufactured in New York, including at the company’s Ellenville factory.
The Model 148 family originated in the 1950s, and the Staglon-handled 148S appeared in the early 1960s.
In a 1962 factory advertisement, Schrade-Walden promoted the 148S as “The Huntsman,” featuring a 5-inch blade, molded Staglon handle, and genuine tooled-leather sheath.
By the late 1960s, this Staglon variation was also marketed as the Deer Skinner.
This knife represents that classic 1960s to early 1970s period of American knife manufacturing.
WHAT MAKES THIS KNIFE SPECIAL?
American-Made Heritage: The blade carries the authentic SCHRADE-WALDEN / N.Y. U.S.A. / 148 tang stamp, identifying it with the historic American manufacturer.
Distinctive Staglon Handle: Schrade developed Staglon as a durable synthetic material resembling natural stag antler. The deeply textured pattern creates a striking appearance and a traditional hunting-knife feel.
Classic Hunting Blade: The approximately 5-inch upswept blade reflects the traditional hunting and skinning designs popular with American outdoorsmen during the mid-20th century.
Traditional Leather Sheath: Includes the pictured vintage brown leather sheath with decorative tooling, stitching, rivets, and snap-style retaining strap. The sheath complements the knife’s classic outdoor appearance.
Honest Vintage Character: This is not a modern reproduction or a freshly polished display piece. It shows the wear and patina of an older hunting knife, with the kind of character many vintage collectors appreciate.
