"Eberhardt William Heinrich was born in Braunschweig (Brunswick), Germany, on February 10, 1918. By 1923, Heinrich had immigrated to America; he spent most of his younger years in Iowa. He attended Deep Springs College and Iowa State University, and would graduate from Iowa State University in 1940 with a B.S. in geology. He later received an M.S. (1942) and Ph.D. (1947), both from Harvard University.

During World War II, Heinrich served in the U.S. Geological Survey as a geologist. After the war concluded, he worked as an instructor at Montana School of Mines (1946-1947) before joining the University of Michigan as an assistant professor of mineralogy in 1947. By 1950, Heinrich had been promoted to associate professor; by 1956, he had attained the rank of full professor. In addition to his work at the University of Michigan, he often served as a consultant to various national industries.

A prodigious writer, Heinrich produced more than one hundred articles and eight books over the course of his career, includingMicroscopic Petrography(1956),The Geology of Carbonatites(1966), andThe Mineralogy of Michigan(1976). He also served as an editor for several journals, such as theAmerican Mineralogist, from 1971-1976. His other accomplishments included—due to his international fieldwork efforts—locating and assessing resources such as beryllium, lithium, thorium, and uranium.

He retired from the University of Michigan in 1983. Upon his retirement, he received the title of Professor Emeritus of Mineralogy.

Eberhardt William Heinrich died in Ann Arbor, Mich.) on July 8, 1991." - University of Michigan Website
