These five-piece sets were designed for the traditional four-person bridge table, combining a square table cover with four individual napkins. They make charming period table linens today even if nobody at the table knows a finesse from a trump card.
Five-piece bridge linen sets were firmly established by the 1930s and were widely advertised through the 1940s and later. A 1933 catalog, for example, describes a five-piece bridge set as a 36\" square cloth with four coordinating napkins, while a 1948 department-store advertisement lists multiple bridge linen sets of this type.
