Vintage Pacific Crest Trail System PCT Embossed Enamel Metal Trail Marker Sign:

Vintage Pacific Crest Trail System Embossed Metal Trail Marker / Sign

Outstanding old Pacific Crest Trail collectible featuring the early “PACIFIC CREST TRAIL SYSTEM” diamond design with central evergreen tree.

This is a genuine older stamped/embossed metal marker, not a modern flat printed sign. The border, lettering and tree design are physically formed into the metal and are clearly visible in reverse from the back.

The front retains its original-style white, dark green and gray enamel/paint finish with substantial age and field wear throughout. The marker shows heavy chipping, scratches, surface oxidation, rust around portions of the edges and mounting holes, and distortion around one mounting hole consistent with long-term fastening/use. Please study all close-up photographs carefully for exact condition.

What makes this example especially interesting is the apparent field use. It does not have the clean, artificially aged appearance of a decorative reproduction. The mounting holes, bent/distorted metal, edge wear, exposed metal, oxidation and loss of finish all give it the character expected from an outdoor trail marker that saw significant use.

The Pacific Crest Trail System predates the modern Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail designation. The trail system was being developed and promoted during the 1930s, and contemporary 1938 reporting described the U.S. Forest Service installing metal trail markers along portions of the Cascade Skyline route in Oregon. The Pacific Crest Trail was formally designated a National Scenic Trail in 1968.

This particular marker uses the classic early-style white diamond / evergreen tree / “Pacific Crest Trail System” configuration associated with older PCT trail marking and documented surviving markers in the Pacific Northwest.

Provenance/context: This piece was acquired in the Pacific Northwest near the Mount Adams / Gifford Pinchot National Forest region, an area directly associated with the PCT corridor. It came from the same source as other unusual older outdoor, map and collectible material, suggesting the previous owner may have had professional or personal involvement with forestry, trails, surveying, recreation or related work. However, no written documentation identifying the exact trail location, agency, installation date or original owner accompanies the marker, so those details are not being represented as proven facts.

The marker appears to have been removed from an actual mounted location at some point in its history, based on the substantial wear and deformation visible around the mounting points, although its precise original location cannot be verified.

Approximate size is visible against the measurement/grid background in the photographs. Please rely on the photos for exact scale and condition.

Condition: Vintage used condition with considerable authentic-looking outdoor wear. Enamel/paint loss, scratches, oxidation, rust, bends, edge wear and mounting-hole damage are present. One mounting area is particularly distorted and worn. No attempt has been made to restore, repaint, straighten, polish or otherwise alter the piece.

It is being offered exactly as found because the original surface, wear and patina are an important part of its character.

Excellent piece for a Pacific Crest Trail collection, PCT thru-hiker display, U.S. Forest Service / forestry collection, national trail collection, vintage trail-sign collection, Pacific Northwest history collection, hiking memorabilia display, cabin, lodge or outdoor-history collection.

Please review every photograph carefully. Photos are considered part of the description.

Exact age and original installation location are unknown and are not guaranteed.

Ships carefully packed to protect the bent edges and original surface.
