For sale is a beautiful, authentic vintage pair of Otagiri porcelain penguin figurines. Made in Japan during the 1980s, this charming set features two penguins sculpted in distinct, expressive poses that complement each other perfectly as a cohesive display.
Founded in 1954 by the Otagiri family, the Otagiri Mercantile Company operated out of headquarters in San Francisco and New York.
Rather than operating its own factories, Otagiri acted as a high-end designer and importer. They hired talented • Western artists (such as Bob Harrison and Arthur Umanoff) to create designs tailored to American tastes, then contracted specialized Japanese kilns and craftsmen to manufacture and hand-paint the pieces.
The 1970s and 1980s marked the peak of Otagiri's popularity. Their whimsical animal figurines, stoneware mugs, and music boxes became staple decor items across the United States.
In 1994, the company was sold to the Enesco Corporation. Shortly after the buyout, the production of Otagiri-branded items was discontinued entirely, turning all surviving pieces into finite vintage collectibles.
Otagiri purposefully designed these animal figurines with expressive, non-identical poses. One penguin looks straight ahead with an upward tilt, while the other is subtly bowing its head and leaning to the side. In the collector community, this is highly valued because it represents a cohesive "mating pair" display rather than two
identical factory duplicates.
What makes them structurally important as a vintage investment is that they will never be produced again. When Enesco bought out Otagiri in 1994, all production ceased and the original mid-century Japanese molds were retired. As a result, the total number of surviving pairs with intact foil manufacturer stickers shrinks every year.
Both pieces feature a smooth, high-gloss glazed finish with hand-painted details on the faces, flippers, and feet. This set proudly retains its original clear foil manufacturer sticker reading "© OTAGIRI Japan" with the signature flower emblem, confirming its authenticity as a genuine, pre-1994 Otagiri Mercantile Company (OMC)
Excellent vintage condition! The porcelain is bright and glossy with no major cracks or heavy crazing. The original clear foil Otagiri manufacturer sticker is intact and attached.
