Vintage Orient Overseas Line “Shellback” Equator Crossing proclamation,
dated December 19, 1972.
This framed ceremonial certificate was issued to a named individual upon
crossing the Equator, a long-standing maritime tradition overseen by
“Neptunus Rex” (King Neptune). These proclamations were presented to
passengers and crew on extended ocean voyages as part of the Shellback
initiation ceremony.
The piece features expressive mid-century artwork, formal proclamation
text, and a world route map at the bottom. Printed by Century Press and
framed in a period red frame, this example displays very well and has strong
historical and decorative appeal.
