Vintage MSA Skullgard Fiberglass Hard Hat US Steel American Bridge Ironworkers For Sale

This is a vintage MSA Skullgard full-brim hard hat with United States Steel markings. It has a USS logo decal and “AB” lettering on the front, a matching blue USS/AB stamp inside the brim, and an Ironworkers union sticker on the side. “AB” most likely stands for American Bridge, U.S. Steel’s bridge-building and structural division. Similar US Steel American Bridge Skullgards are listed at $255.

The inside label reads Skullgard Protective Hat or Cap, made by Mine Safety Appliances Company in Pittsburgh, PA. It’s marked as compliant with ANSI Z89.1-1969 Class A, which dates it to around the 1970s, and it carries part number 993742 and CP 171. The shell shows the classic tiger-stripe fiberglass weave. It’s a great piece of industrial and union history for steelworker, ironworker, and Pittsburgh collectors.
