A little history... Melmac was a brand of dinnerware made from melamine resin, a chemical compound that was known for being break-resistant. American Cyanamid was the manufacturer and the dinnerware was molded from their melamine compound. Harmony House (sold through Sears) used this material for their popular mid-century \"Catalina\" line.
Safety Note: While vintage Melmac dishes are durable and lightweight, current health guidelines recommend avoiding high heat (such as microwaves, ovens, or harsh commercial dishwashers) because heat can cause the plastic to degrade or leach chemicals.
